Steeped in history and architectural distinction, the Baltic is a Grade II listed landmark originally built in 1922 by the renowned architect Sir Edwin Cooper. Celebrated for a style described as “essentially Classical, and sometimes powerfully Baroque,” Cooper brought a sense of grandeur and permanence to the City’s streetscape.
A recipient of the prestigious RIBA Gold Medal, Cooper's legacy includes several notable commissions, among them the original 1928 offices of Lloyd’s of London on Leadenhall Street. Today, 38 St Mary Axe stands as a testament to this rich architectural heritage—a building where historic significance and enduring craftsmanship remain central to its identity.
